Section Two: Flying A Trainer Kite
About Trainer Kites
A trainer kite is a tool used to understand the fundamentals of kite flying before attempting to fly a much larger, more dangerous, inflatable kite. Trainer kites are typically 2 - 3 meters in size and are almost always foil kites. A foil kite is made from ripstop nylon material and is sewn together so that it has several different "pockets" or "chambers" that fill with air once the openings are pointed into the wind. The benefits of a foil kite are that they can fly in very light winds which make for ideal learning conditions. There is less danger involved in winds that are lighter than 10 mph.
Setting up a trainer kite is very simple if you understand the wind awareness concepts that I discussed earlier in this article. To set up the trainer kite, stand with your back into the wind.
